What we collect, where it goes, and how long we keep it. Short version: we don't know who you are, and we only keep a recording if you press Save.

Who runs this

This is a small trial run by your teacher, not a product sold by a company and not an official school system. It exists to find out whether an AI examiner can usefully help HSC students practise speaking.

What we don't collect

We do not ask for or store your name, email, student number, date of birth, or school. The system only knows the invite code your teacher gave you, which is a random string like ABCD-2345.

Your teacher keeps the list of which code went to which student, on paper or on their own computer. That list is never uploaded here.

One exception, and it's your choice: if you send us a message through the contact form and want a reply, you can leave an email or phone number. It is used only to reply to you, and is deleted once we've answered. Leave it blank and your message is completely anonymous.

What we do collect

  • Your speech, while you are practising.
  • The text transcription of what you said, and the AI's marks and comments on it.
  • Which level, topic and question you practised, when, and how long it took — so your teacher can see whether the tool is working.

Who your speech is sent to

To transcribe and mark your speaking, your audio is sent to two external services:

  • OpenAI — transcription, the live AI examiner, and marking. Processed overseas.
  • Microsoft Azure AI Speech — pronunciation scoring and reading questions aloud. Processed in Australia.

We do not send them your name or invite code — only the audio and the question text, because we have no other information about you.

Recordings — only if you save

While you practise, your audio is used to produce the marking and then discarded. A recording is only stored if you choose to press Save on a result.

Saved recordings are stored in Australia (Microsoft Azure, Australia East) and are automatically deleted after 60 days. Your teacher can listen to what you saved, so they can check whether the AI marked you fairly.

Feedback you send us

If you rate the marking, answer a quick survey, or report a problem, we store your answer along with your invite code — so your teacher can follow up on it. Please don't type personal details into those boxes.

If you are under 18

Please make sure a parent or guardian knows you are taking part and is comfortable with it. Your teacher can give them a short information sheet explaining exactly what this involves.

Taking part is voluntary

You can stop at any time — just stop using the code. It will not affect your marks, your coursework, or anything at school.

You can ask your teacher to delete your saved recordings at any point, and they will be removed.

Questions

Ask your teacher — they set this up and can answer anything here, or pass it on to the people who built it.

You can also send us a message directly, including to ask for your data to be deleted. You don't need an invite code to use that form, so parents and guardians can use it too.

This is a research trial, not a commercial service.
